interview: winning many awards best blog
Actor Wil Wheaton dominated with six awards out of 30—including Best Merchandise of a Weblog, Best American Weblog, Best Tagline of a Weblog, Most Humorous Weblog, Best New Weblog, and Weblog of the Year.
Wil Wheaton
Wil Wheaton made a name for himself in Rob Reiner’s film adaptation of Steven King’s Stand by Me and later as a teenager in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Today, Wil continues to work in show business and has one of the most popular blogs on the web.
I chatted with Wil by email after his success to find out whether his blog has helped his acting career, why he chose the blog format in the first place, and how he really feels about Counselor Troi—among other things. (The stuff about Thai “streetwalkers,” cheating at sports, and pornographic images was totally unsolicited.)
BIZ: So Wil, you decided you want a web site, and you wanted to build it yourself. What made you choose the blog format?
WW: I’ve always wanted to write, and I’ve always liked the idea of dynamic content. It also gave me a chance to clear up all the misconceptions about me and show the world that the person behind Wesley Crusher is even more annoying than the guy on screen. Oh, and sexier. Much, much sexier. like blog center fine art indonesia which I think very beautiful blog, because composition design blog which is good with painting original which is beautiful.
BIZ: I’m not so sure you got that across, but you did sweep at the Bloggies. Congrats on that.
WW: Thanks. Recognition for my work is always nice, but that was very unexpected.
BIZ: Did you know a little HTML before you set out? How much web-building
experience did you have before you created your blog?
WW: None. I taught myself in about six weeks—by studying really hard and learning from my mistakes. I also had some help from some very skilled and patient people.
BIZ: Setting a good example for the kids. Nice, I like that.
WW: It’s too bad that you can’t cheat on web design, like you can cheat at sports.
BIZ: Okay, forget the part about the kids. Wow, you started from scratch. But why build it all yourself? Why not just use Blog*Spot or some other easy blog host?
WW: My friends who own blog seo tutorial do all sorts of awesome stuff for five bucks a month, so I didn’t need to host with anyone else. I understand that I’ve brought them lots of business, so if I ever go with them to Bangkok, the hookers are on them. You think Blog*Spot would buy you a hooker? Not in a million years, baby.
BIZ: I wouldn’t know. You’d have to email Jason Shellen about that. But getting away from hookers, what have you taught yourself? What programming languages?
WW: I only know enough PHP to do includes. But I’m learning more scripting so that I can do cool stuff on my web site. I use Dreamweaver to do all the basic markup; then I clean everything up in Notepad.
BIZ: Do you think your blog has helped your acting career?
WW: Yeah.
BIZ: Really? In what way?
WW: I think it’s reminded people that I was still acting, still writing, and it’s shown the industry that people still care about what I’m doing. I mean, I’m getting 250,000 hits a day. Without a single pornographic image. Take that, William Shatner!
BIZ: Cool, so the industry responded to your blog. Wow, 250,000 hits a day? You must have thought about trying to make a few bucks. How much money have you generated?
WW: None, really. I haven’t sold any ads, because I hate advertising. I suppose I could make some money if I wanted to, but that’s not why I’m doing this. I make enough to cover the costs by selling T-shirts and stuff in my store—with whatever’s left being split evenly between the “take my wife out to dinner” and “buy Wil a PS2″ funds. I’ve recently put up a tip jar thingy, and the regular readers of my site seem to think it’s a cool thing.
BIZ: But what about hosting TextAds?
WW: Hey, I just said that I hate advertising.
BIZ: Yeah, but…
WW: Are you even listening to me?
BIZ: Okay, no ads. I’ll change the subject. One of your Bloggies was for Most Humorous Weblog. Say something funny.
WW: No. You’re not the boss of me.
BIZ: Fine. What blogging software did you try? What did you end up with, and will you stick with it?
WW: I started with Blogger, which I really liked, but didn’t like having content sort of “out of my control.” Then I used Greymatter, which I absolutely loved, but my server couldn’t handle the massive CGI load it created. Now, I’m using Movable Type, which I really like, and I am very, very happy with. I’m on version 1.4 right now, and 2.0 is supposed to be out next week. If it does all the stuff they say it will do, I’ll probably stick with it forever. Or at least until my 15 minutes run out. Then I’ll keep my blog on the backside of Jack Daniel’s labels.
BIZ: I’ll be reading it daily. What was the biggest problem you had to overcome? What produced the most profanity?
WW: The whole f***ing thing, man. I hate computers, and I really hate the Internet.
BIZ: I see.
WW: Wait, I didn’t mean that. I love computers! I love the Internet. I can change. Give me
another chance! I feel like a battered user sometimes.
BIZ: So, are your Star Trek X co-stars going to ask you to build them blogs?
WW: I doubt they’d ask me. They’ve all got professional webmasters who could kick my ass in a coding contest.
BIZ: Whose blog would you bookmark?
WW: I bet they’d all be cool to read in their own ways. But I’d only read Marina’s if she’d go on and on about how much she regrets not having sex with me when I turned 18.
BIZ: Do you think that blogs are going to replace the traditional home page?
WW: Yes. I think it’s happening already. like blog indonesia owned by my friend, the blog titles is center of safe and health tips, he can reach for success with that, because besides very search engine optimized her also honest and devoted serves visitor with installing yahoo online masenger in that blog, I also think that blogs are rapidly changing the way information moves across the net
BIZ: So blogs are changing the Internet and publishing in general?
WW: It’s another step in the evolution of communications, like the printing press, or fortune
cookies.
