The Real Dope On Blogging
Blogging isn’t a web 2.0 activity in the sense that readers themselves continue to generate new content for you. Blogging is much closer to the informal discussions you have in the hallway or via email than it is to peer-reviewed papers. Blogging is not journalism nor is it email. But if each imagined itself as the other, some good might come of that.
Blogging is no more dead than email, which has also had its share of doomsayers. Blogging is not dead, it has merely found its place in the grand scheme of all things social media. Blogging is like anything else, it takes a lot of hard work and patience. At the end, success rate for making money with a blog is probably lower than someone making money by starting their own business. Blogging is a very good tool for advancing a career but not the only tool and the implementation, of course, is the key.
Blogging is a great way to reach a lot of people. But it’s very, very time consuming. Blogging is writing, and should use the proper skills and tools for your language’s grammar, but it is also very different from other styles of writing. For example, shorter paragraphs and more use of the imperative. Blogging is emerging as a vocation in its own right and the rewards for blog stars are beginning to materialize in writing and review contracts, conference appearance requests and consulting opportunities. I think that the web presence (validated by a variety of indexes) provided through regular Blog posting will increasingly be seen as an indicator of contribution.
Blogging is more than the sum of its parts. Blogging is essentially the 21st century equivalent of a newsletter. The good news is there are significant advantages to blogging over a newsletter. Blogging is a form of self-publishing, and you may find that colleagues and students, known and unknown to you, visit your site.
Millions of bloggers wants to make money with their blog and work very hard to achieve this goal. But the fact is that 95% of bloggers don’t even earn $100 per month from blogging. Millions of bloggers are writing on a daily basis and many of them are writing on similar topics. Because of the sheer number of blogs fighting for the same eyeballs, it is becoming harder to become popular.
Weblogs seem to lend themselves to something like short magazine articles, and they are easy to create and post to. The more I blog the more intrigued I become with the potential for Web-based discourse. Web publishing is transforming. And the nature of publishers’ interaction with the public has dramatically shifted. Web sites are static and Google recognizes bloggers. Search engines also report on your reputation.
Links and readers need to be earned — they are hard to manufacture. Linking to others blogs and then leaving comments on other blogs with your blog link is great! You will create traffic for yourself and get others to look at your blog by referring to them.
