What's the Difference Between a Website and a Blog?

If you’re just starting out, you may wonder what the difference is between a website and a blog. You may even want to know where to begin, especially if you have a limited budget. I’ll share the purpose of each and you should be able to make the best decision for you and your business.

A Website is for Selling

The primary function of a website is to sell a product or service. You need a domain, hosting, a product or service to sell, sales copy and a shopping cart. Those are the main components of a website.

You can spend time fussing over non-important details such as the website design, graphics and logo. But it really isn’t about the aesthetics. Make sure there’s a market for what you’re selling, communicate well in the sales copy and have a shopping cart so your customers can actually purchase the product or service. If your website sells, then it’s serving it’s purpose.

A Blog is for Communicating

The primary function of a blog is to communicate with your customers. You can set up a personal blog, a business blog or both. Think of it as an online diary. You can share any and everything:

Your Thoughts
Opinions
Articles
Reviews
Videos
Surveys
Product Information
Conference Call,Webinar, and Seminar Schedules
Special events

The possibilities are endless. Blogging is about deepening your relationship with your customers. They can track what you’re doing and get a glimpse into your world. It’s a great way to distribute information. Plus, you can turn your blog into an online community where you encourage a dialogue between everyone. What better way to stay on top of what they want is if you talk to them directly.

Why You Need Both

You may want to start with one or the other, but I would encourage you to eventually incorporate both into your internet marketing business. You need to ability to sell and communicate with customers. In general a blog is simpler and cheaper to start with, but you definitely need a website to compliment it.

Of course you can use either for both functions. You can monetize a blog with affiliate programs and product or service offerings. But be careful not to alienate your customer with over-selling. They want a place for pressure-free information. You can also give information on a website. Of course that info will be static in nature because the customers will not be able to communicate back to you.

Blogs and websites are unique and serve very specific purposes. They compliment one another. Use both to take advantage of what they have to offer for you and your business.

Building websites and blogging are both extensive topics within themselves. Visit the website for more top tips on blogs and websites. Keep an inside track on super affiliates and internet marketers.
