Religious Conversion Attempts In Chat Rooms
In a world of religious pluralism, the many pathways to the afterlife would seem to comprise of theological buffet table. In some countries, religion is the government. In others, religions can be bandied about like a badminton shuttlecock. In the United States, we have a society that forbids the establishment of any state religion, even though the vast majority of Americans adhere to Christianity (the predominant religion on Earth with numbers nearing 2 billion).
Spreading The Word
Some religions are much more ambitious about spreading their particular gospel than others. Catholicism, for example, has never been known for particularly strident conversion efforts. Mormonism, on the other hand, sees conversion as a founding principal, a core belief. Islam has been labeled (perhaps unfairly) as regarding non-Muslims as infidels who must either be converted or put to death. All in all, religion is both divisive and inclusive – the members of the various churches dig in deeply into their own circles, shutting others out until or unless they share their beliefs.

On the other side of the coin is the strength one derives from one’s faith. No matter the zeal of the attempted conversion, it will be resisted with every fiber of one’s soul. Catholics in particular have this ingrained within their collective identity. The Romans made them grist for the Coliseum but could not extinguish their belief system. They had to deal with the Spanish Inquisition in the event that the Catholic Church even thought they were considering conversion.
Conversion attempts in modern times are much more subtle, and can be seemingly inoccuous. The modern era of social networking provides those who commit this religious interference with fertile ground, including popular Christian singles chat rooms where people gather to seek out their spiritual matches. The focus should be on fostering such relationships, not on changing minds, hearts and souls.
