The Beginning Steps Using Keywords
If you don’t already know what keywords are, there just words people use to search for something. You can relate them to searching in the phone book. If your looking for “carpet cleaning” then that’s the section you use in the phone book, the Internet is no different.
Three Steps
There are three steps to working with keywords..
Finding a reliable source to get them from.
Analyizing which ones are useful for your application.
Competition.
Briefly, Google is the biggest and most reliable source to get keywords from. They have a FREE tool that will give keyword matches and this tool is widely used by most Internet owners.
You might put in the word Auto, then Google will give you a list of words people searched for using the word auto. It might be auto parts, auto insurance, auto repairs, you get the idea. From there you can take the next step.
Analyzing
Here’s the story. What good is getting you site ranked for a keyword if only a handful of people are searching it daily? So, is there a market out there for that word? Next, if you plan to use adsense (most people do) then are advertisers paying a decent amount to make this keyword worth your time?
Finally, is the market your attarcting with those keywords the types that want what your selling?
These are questions to answer before moving on to the next step.
Competition
#3 is, do you have a chance to get your website on the first page of Google for that keyword?
If sites on the first page, for that keyword, are aged, have lots of traffic, links and have authority, chances are almost nill that you will rank.
It’s best to work on keywords that have less competion and build some strength for your site first, then go after bigger fish later.
It doesn’t sound like it, but once you understand what keywords are about and you realize how it translates into money, it will be fun.
